Winter Wonderland

January 10, 2017

As the temperatures continue to fall in the UK and Eire Lanzarote is enjoying one of its best winters in many years, with the mercury climbing well into the mid 20’s and the sky untroubled by little in the way of cloud.

This is of course in stark contrast to last winter, which in the north of the island was characterized by almost constant grey cloud cover, created apparently by a kink in the jet stream. However this year normal service has been resumed, enabling tourists to enjoy the island’s amazing winter climate to the full.

For many visitors from the colder climes of Northern Europe this is like stepping back into summer, as they are able to visit the beach, swim in the sea and bask under blue skies. But for many the key aspect of all this is the light, which during winter is simply amazing due to the lower angle of the sun.

Little wonder then that the island continues to go from strength to strength in terms of visitor numbers, with the latest figures just released revealing that 2015 was the best year ever in terms of arrivals on Lanzarote, as 2.1 million foreign tourists touched down on the tarmac at Arrecife airport.

This represents an increase of just over 60% since the depths of the recession back in 2009 and currently Lanzarote’s popularity shows no signs of abating. Having been fuelled by positive PR and growing awareness of the islands’ many attractions in key target markets such as the UK, whilst also further aided by ongoing issues in former competitor destinations, most notably the Middle East.

Certainly for anyone based in Northern Europe who is thinking about a winter break Lanzarote and the Canary Islands are now the obvious choice. As they are super accessible at just a four hour flight away whilst offering guaranteed sunshine in a politically stable environment.
