Walk On

January 10, 2017

Tourists staying in one of our villas in Playa Blanca over the next week or so have the chance to take part in one of Lanzarote’s largest annual festivals this coming weekend, as the annual pilgrimage to the small village of Mancha Blanca takes place this coming Saturday, drawing in tens of thousands of locals.

Mancha Blanca is sometimes referred to as Lanzarote’s miracle village, as it was on the outskirts of the pueblo that the volcanic lava flow from the Timanfaya area finally came to a halt. Thanks, apparently, to the parading of an icon of the local saint, Dolores, who is also now known as our Lady of the Volcanoes.

The fiesta is part homage and part massive party, as islanders don traditional dress to make the walk to Mancha Blanca from all points across the island, with many villages and communities walking together in unison. However this is not a solemn pilgrimage by any means as these groups are also usually accompanied by shopping trolleys stacked with liquid refreshments, whilst there are food stalls and bars aplenty on arrival in Mancha Blanca.

If you’re unable to make the pilgrimage itself on Saturday the 10th of September then there’s still the chance to soak up plenty of local folklore at the Artesan Fair which follows, which is taking place from the 14th to the 18th of September in Mancha Blanca.

The craft fair is now in its 28th year and features over 100 stalls that showcase local skills such as lace making, basket weaving and pottery and runs daily from 11.00 to 22.00. So if you’re enjoying a break with us here on Lanzarote make sure to take in a taste of local traditions.
