Playa Blanca’s Tapas Trail

June 7, 2017

They say it’s the little things in life that matter – and when it comes to Tapas we couldn’t agree more. As these smaller, shared servings are synonymous with the sort of relaxed sociability that is central to the Spanish way of life.

So much so in fact that the country’s Ministry of Culture is currently attempting to secure UNESCO protected status for the nation’s most popular culinary practice!

Tapas has some serious historic pedigree in Spain too – as one legend has it that their introduction dates back as far as the 13th century – when the ruler King Alfonso X was so stricken by serious illness that all he could manage to consume were small portions of food.

Other theorists suggest that Tapas started life as slivers of bread or meat that were used to cover glasses and keep flies away from the all important wine in the hotter parts of Spain such as Andalucia.

Either way the Tapas scene here on Lanzarote is in rude health today, so if you’re renting one of our villas in Playa Blanca there are plenty of appetizing options to explore around the resort.

LA KATEDRAL

Avenida Maritima 21

Tel : 928 519855

Open : 10.30 – 12 closed Thursday

Whilst its external appearance could be described as a little unassuming the staff at La Katedral are clearly doing something right – as this seafront restaurant and tapas bar keeps earning rave reviews. Thanks to a winning combination of unbeatable location, great sea views and decent dishes served at very reasonable prices. As well as all of the usual suspects such as gambas al ajillo and albondingas

La Katedral also offer up some slightly more unusual daily menu specials, such as a prawn and artichoke salad and smoked sardines. Which helps to lift it a little above most of the other restaurants along this stretch of Playa Blanca’s sea front promenade.

EL PEREGINO

Calle Correillo 60

Tel : 647 449530

Open 12.00 – 02.00 closed Monday

If you’re looking for something a little more authentic and want to step away from the more touristy establishments on the seafront then follow the steady flow of locals heading into El Peregrino, a popular but unpretentious eatery which is tucked away by the Post Office close to the centre of town.

El Peregrino boasts plenty of local character and atmosphere and is open until the small hours – offering a tasty range of tapas treats at easily digestible prices. With menu favourites including spinach croquettes, crunchy chicken and broken eggs with chorizo (or eggs, chips and sausage!). As well as very keenly priced local wines and beers.

EL BODEGON LAS TAPAS

Avenida Maritima 29

Tel : 928 518310

Open : Sunday to Saturday 11.30 – 23.30

Another sea front special, El Bodegon’s coastal location by the harbour means you can watch the ferries make their crossing whilst browsing their tapas menu with a glass of something cool.

There’s plenty of local fayre on offer too, such as lapas (limpets) and goats cheese salad amongst the offerings.

EL MIRADOR

Calle Berrugo 2

Tel : 928 519427

Open Daily 12.00 – 23.00

OK, so El Mirador isn’t exactly spit and sawdust – indeed it doubles up as a high end eatery. But it’s also tops for tapas with a twist – reflecting the modern, contemporary style of this seafront establishment which is located close to the Marina Rubicon and Playa Dorada.

The prices aren’t the cheapest either, placing El Mirador in the special treat category – but the presentation and range of choice on offer is truly impressive, encompassing everything from mini lamb burgers through to a tartar of tuna served with strawberries.
