Sea Sculptures for Playa Blanca

January 10, 2017

The island’s tourist authorities are set to invest €700,000 in an exciting and innovative new project that should help to further boost tourism in Playa Blanca, with the creation of Europe’s first ‘underwater museum’.

The project is the brainchild of Jason deCaires Taylor, the creator of MUSA, which is the subaquatic museum of Mexico. And the plan is to create a set of statues which will be located some 12 metres beneath the waves just off the coast at Los Coloradas, which will be easily accessible to divers and snorkelers and which will also have the added benefit of encouraging marine life and the growth of coral colonies.

DeCaires Taylor has already created over 500 similar statues at MUSA off the coast of Cancun and his Lanzarote figures will also be crafted from environmentally friendly materials that are designed to last for hundreds of years.

The project is designed to boost subaquatic tourism on the island whilst also giving both Playa Blanca and Lanzarote a substantial PR boost. Lanzarote’s southern-most resort is located at the opposite end of the island from most of Manrique’s key attractions and the new underwater museum is also expected to counter balance this.

MUSA has certainly proved to be a hugely popular tourist attraction in Cancun, attracting over 750,000 visitors per year, so it is hoped that this success can be replicated in Playa Blanca. Typically however no timescale has a yet been assigned for this project.
