Here come the French

January 10, 2017

Foreign tourists continue to flock to Lanzarote as the latest data just released by ISTAC, the Canarian Institute of Statistics reveals, with passenger numbers during the first nine months of this year rising by an impressive 14%.

But whilst the UK remains Lanzarote’s largest market by some distance, accounting for nearly half of all tourist visits so far this year its France that is the island’s fastest growing source of visitors, with arrival numbers soaring by an amazing 113% during the course of last month alone.

So far during 2014 Lanzarote has welcomed a total of 1,808,478 visitors as the island’s upward trend in terms of tourist numbers continues to gain momentum. But what are the most important markets? And who are you going to be sharing beach space with if you’re planning a villa holiday here on Lanzarote?

British tourism topped 837,321 arrivals for the year to date last month, which means that the UK accounts for 46.2% of all passengers. And after the domestic Spanish market (totalling 13%) the next biggest markets are Germany and Ireland with 11% and 9% respectively along with Holland with 4%.

A few years ago French tourism barely registered on the radar here, but in a very short space of time France has emerged as Lanzarote’s fifth most important market – one that is also growing at a much more rapid pace than any other too.

So far this year the French have accounted for 69,524 arrivals, or 3.8% of the total tourist market. But this figure has increased very sharply as in 2012 the island welcomed just 27,516 French visitors, rising to 58,864 in total during the course of 2013. So the French revolution looks set to continue apace on Lanzarote as last year’s arrival figures were surpassed back in August. And now look set to break the 90,000 barrier for the first time ever this year.

So what’s behind this upsurge? Analysts need look no further than the budget airline Ryanair, who have been operating services out of Paris Beauvais airport for some time now, whilst Lanzarote’s unique volcanic landscapes have also clearly struck a chord with the French public.
