Green Light for Marina

January 10, 2017

Following the successful development of the new Sport Marina in Arrecife, the local council for Yaiza has announced that the ferry port in Playa Blanca will see redevelopment plans implemented from September this year.

The envisaged amplification of the port will command a much higher budget of 43.7 million Euros and will allow much larger cruise ships to dock with ease in the outer harbour.

When plans for the extension of the harbour were originally mooted there was some local opposition, as there was some uncertainty about how such a development might affect the seafront promenade, which is one of Playa Blanca’s best loved features. However, the winning design should ensure that the current layout in the town centre and around Punta Limones is enhanced, rather than handicapped.

It’s envisaged that the current arm of the harbour wall will be extended to create a much larger outer port, leaving the existing marina to be redeveloped for smaller vessels and providing further berths for yachts, sport fishing boats and excursions. Adding to Lanzarote’s marine capacity should act as a further attraction to the growing number of visitors who arrive by sea in the Canaries.

With the island soon being able to boast of two ports that can handle cruise liners, five harbours for luxury craft such as yachts, speed boats and touring vessels, it’s clear that messing about in boats is a strong part of Lanzarote’s future tourist appeal.

As with previous developments, construction of the port’s extension is being put out to tender, with the winning contractor able to commence work at the end of the summer this year.
