David Cameron Takes Break On Lanzarote

March 3, 2017

If you’re holidaying on Lanzarote over Easter then you’ll be in good company, as the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, is also currently enjoying a break from the rigours of running the country with his family on the island.

with the Maria Miller scandal and the looming threat of UKIP, UK Prime Minister David Cameron could be said to deserve a week’s holiday in the sun. And he’s certainly getting that on Lanzarote as temperatures on the island are currently in the mid 20’s Celsius. Cameron and company arrived on the island last Thursday and initial press reports suggested that they would be based in a five star hotel in the resort of Playa Blanca. This was obviously something of a media smokescreen however, as the worst kept secret on Lanzarote is the fact that the Cameron’s are staying at a rural retreat in San Bartolome called Casa Tomaren.

Indeed the Cameron’s aren’t exactly keeping a low profile, as they were spotted enjoying a stroll around the busy Sunday market in Teguise yesterday, which is just a short drive from their holiday base in the centre of the island. Whilst on Saturday he was enjoying the amazing beach at Famara – a surfers paradise on the north west coast – along with wife Samantha and kids, Nancy, Arthur and Florence Rose.

News of the Cameron’s visit broke last week in a BBC Radio Norfolk interview, with the PM quoted as saying ‘I am going to be spending a bit of time with my mother-in-law,’ he said. ‘I think I am spending Easter with Samantha’s family.’ They are expected to stay on the island until Friday and it is their first visit to the Canaries. Local authorities have upped security on Lanzarote as a result of the visit whilst local tourist authorities are delighted with the news, describing it as a pat on the back for the island’s tourist industry.

Lanzarote is certainly a very popular holiday hot spot, welcoming around 1.8 million foreign tourists last year, with around 50% of them flying in from the UK. David Cameron now joins a long list of VIP visitors which includes many other politicians, particularly from the Spanish mainland. For example former Prime Minister Zapatero was a regular visitor to the island during his term of office, usually staying at the Las Maretas Palaece in Costa Teguise, a private residence built originally for the King of Jordan.
