Bumper Year For Tourism

January 10, 2017

The number of tourists visiting Lanzarote has grown by a whopping 26.3% over the last four years, according to data just released by ISTAC, the Canarian Institute of Statistics, as the island celebrated a record breaking year for arrivals during 2014.

The number of tourists enjoying a sunshine break on Lanzarote soared by nearly 11% during 2014 versus 2013 figures and is up by 26.3% on 2010, as the popularity of the most easterly of the Canary Islands continued to climb.

A total of 2,339,751 arrivals were recorded at Arrecife airport last year and the UK accounted for the bulk of these passengers, as over 1 million British holidaymakers touched down on the island. Mainland Spain emerged as Lanzarote’s second largest source of visitors (305,668 passengers), followed by Germany (290,444) and Eire (200,646).

Even more revealing though are the longer term figures comparing last year’s performance with 2010, as they give greater perspective on the island’s emerging markets. All markets showed considerable growth over this period, with the exception of arrivals from Spain, which were down by 26.9% and Austria, down 24.4%.

Established markets such as the UK and Eire grew impressively, by 37% and 34% respectively. But it was the newer markets that really grabbed the attention, with French arrivals up by 718% and Italian passenger numbers up by 162.3%.
