Retirement Taster’ Trips to Lanzarote?

February 26, 2018

For many Brits, retirement means one thing – jetting off to a beautiful island and living out your golden years with sangria in hand, your working life but a distant memory. It sounds like a wonderful idea, doesn’t it? But the process of finding the right place to retire to can be exhausting, the stakes being very high if you get it wrong.>

Well, we think we have the perfect solution to this dilemma: a ‘retirement taster’ holiday, where you live the life of an expat for a week and see if Lanzarote is the perfect place for your retirement. Not convinced yet? Below, you’ll find five reasons we know you’ll love your first taste of retired life.

Lanzarote’s slow pace of life

The local pace of life is gloriously, meanderingly slow – the service in the beachside restaurants often gives you plenty of time to just sit and take in the view, basking in the glorious Lanzarote weather. Add to the mix some of Europe’s lowest alcohol prices and a very high life expectancy, you might even be able to argue that sitting in a bar each evening nursing a few jarras of Dorada or Tropical is, in fact, good for you. We couldn’t possibly comment.

But if slow-paced isn’t for you…

Lanzarote’s fast pace of life

If a retirement spent lounging around all day is not what you’re after, you’re in luck. There are all sorts of activities available on the island – perfect for a taster session or two when deciding what your new post-retirement hobby is going to be. Scuba diving in Lanzarote is very popular, with plenty of undersea treats like the otherworldly sculptures at the Museo Atlántico in Playa Blanca. There are also plenty of cycling routes that are favoured by professional teams for warm-weather training, as well as sea kayaking, hiking and just about anything else you can think of!

A wealth of culture to explore

Lanzarote’s cultural credentials are impressive to say the least, and that is largely thanks to one man – César Manrique. The painter and architect was born on Lanzarote and became a famous artist before returning to the island and successfully lobbying for a ban on high-rise buildings, and for more traditional construction techniques. The result is that the island has retained much of its authenticity, and Manrique went on to design a number of buildings and sculptures across the island – the most notable being the Jameos del Agua (the beautiful concert venue built within a volcanic cave).

There are all kinds of culturally significant Lanzarote day trips out there, so the risk of retirement boredom is very low indeed.

Glorious, sun-soaked golfing

It’s a cliche, we know. But there are a whole host of fantastic golf clubs on the island, should you choose to spend your golden years trying to lower your handicap. Just think: with the beautiful climate, there’s little chance of your day on the course being rained off, no chance of losing your ball in muddy bracken… It’s a beautiful thought, and even if you’ve never golfed before, the idyllic courses on Lanzarote are perfect for beginners.

The villa experience

Staying in one of our many villas in Lanzarote is the only way to truly get a taste of the Lanzarote retirement lifestyle. A private, self-catering villa with a pool means all of your time is your own – just as it will be if you choose to take the plunge and retire to the island full-time.

Our villas are mostly located towards the less bustling end of the island surrounding Playa Blanca, meaning your retirement taster getaway will be relaxed and peaceful, and less like a package holiday. Subsequently, if you decide to move to Lanzarote, you can rest assured that there are plenty of great villa options for your family when they fly out to join you for a few weeks – to give them a taster of your indulgent Lanzarote lifestyle!

Whether you have grand plans to retire to Lanzarote or not, we hope this blog post has inspired you to take in all that the island has to offer. If you’re looking for private accommodation to go with the perfect island getaway, one of our villas could be just the thing.
