High Fliers

January 10, 2017

Lanzarote’s popularity as a tourist destination continues to grow by the month. As the latest figures, just released by AENA, reveal that the quantity of non Spanish holidaymakers visiting the island grew again in February, up by a very impressive 9% year on year.

It looks highly likely that Lanzarote is all set for another record breaking year. All of the ingredients are there. As a destination the island has really matured over the last five years, with infrastructure upgraded and standards rising as we finally shake off that tired old Lanza grotty cliche. The resorts are all thriving and occupation levels in both hotels and private villas are at their healthiest in many years. The word is well and truly out about the island in all key markets too, thanks to plenty of high profile PR visits, not least David Cameron’s recent break in Playa Blanca, which grabbed the headlines in the UK as well as around Europe.

Along with all of these strong, positive factors, the island and the Canaries in general are also benifitting from the increasingly deleterious situation in the Middle East. Previous key competitors such as Tunisia and Egypt are no longer at the races. Whilst interest in destinations such as Turkey and Morocco is also on the wane, especially amongst British holidaymakers. And as recent events have shown even mainland Europe carries something of a risk factor. All of which has resulted in a huge upswing of interest in the Canaries and Lanzarote in particular.

This is further evidenced by the recent increase in the number of flight services and routes to the island from both the UK and around Europe. In the last two months alone Ryanair has unveiled a new route to the island from Newcastle, jet2 have added services from Edinburgh and Thomas Cook’s German arm, Condor, have spread their wings flying out of Manchester airport direct to Arrecife. So Lanzarote really is all set for take off in 2016.
