Small Wonders

January 10, 2017

Tourists staying on the island are in for a tasty treat this weekend as Lanzarote’s 5th annual Tapas Festival is taking place in the resort of Puerto del Carmen. Featuring some creative cooking with local produce by a whole raft of top local chef’s and restaurants as well as a fine array of local wines. All of which can be enjoyed in a real festival atmosphere in the Old Town harbour area of the resort.

As most regular visitors will probably already know Tapas is a generic name that covers an enormously wide selection of small snacks and appetizers that are best enjoyed with a drink. And derive their name from the Spanish verb tapar, which means to cover, allegedly originatin in Andalusia where the locals used bread or meat to cover their glasses in between sips in the hope of depriving the local fly population of a drink.

Today tapas covers any small serving of food in Spain and it is a universally popular way of enjoying a bite to eat in this highly social country, where it’s just as important to make time for conversation as it is for chewing.

The Feria de Tapa in Puerto del Carmen will feature a mind boggling array of different small delights and gets underway on Saturday October 1st at 18.00 through until 23.00, featuring live music from local group El Pavon at 21.30. And then it’s heads down again on Sunday the 2nd from 11.00 to 16.00, with more live music at 14.30 from Salvapantallas.
