Winter Weather

January 10, 2017

Whilst regular visitors know all about Lanzarote’s amazing climate during the winter months it often comes as a shock to many fist time visitors to find that they can enjoy long lazy sun drenched days by the pool or on the beach even during December and January.

When we first visited Lanzarote myself back in 2000 we arrived on Boxing Day, having escaped a snowbound Gatwick airport by the skin of our teeth. We didn’t know what to expect weather wise to be honest, in retrospect I think we were hoping for few warm Spring like days and little more. But waking up on our first morning in Playa Blanca sun streamed through the windows and illuminated tropical plants and flowers in the garden of our rental villa, heralding a week of brilliant weather with temperatures well into the 20’s Celsius. And so began an addiction to the island and it’s climate which soon resulted into a permanent move.

Many first time visitors don’t fully appreciate that whilst the Canary Islands may be owned by Spain they are not in fact located anywhere near the Spanish mainland at all and are instead situated close to the Tropic of Capricorn just off the coast of North Africa. As a result the islands often don’t cool down at all during the Autumn months, as is the case in the Med and mainland Europe, with October and November often proving to be two of the best months of the year for great weather.

The Canaries are also subject to totally different weather systems than their cousins in the Balearics. For example the archipelago is often affected by dust clouds blown in from the Sahara, known locally as a calima. Which creates a sort of cap above the islands so helping to further heighten temperatures.

So how reliable is the weather during the Christmas period? This is obviously one of the most popular dates for rental bookings and with good reason. As over the last 16 years spent living on Lanzarote the vast majority of our Christmas Days have been spent relaxing on a beach. Sure, the sea temperature can be cool, but there’s usually sunshine aplenty. Making it one of the best times of year to book a villa holiday in Lanzarote.
