Manrique Trail

January 10, 2017

Tourist authorities in Arrecife are continuing their push to attract more visitors to the capital with the announcement of a new plan to create a Manrique Trail. Which would allow aficionados of the island born artist and architect to discover more about his work within the confines of the capital.

As well as creating some of the island’s best known attractions such as the Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Rio and the Cactus Garden, Manrique also had a hand in some much smaller projects in and around Arrecife, such as the social and cultural centre El Almacen and the Casa Amarilla, as well as siting sculptures on roundabouts and walkways.

But his best known work in the metropolis is undoubtedly the stylish restaurant which is located in the basement of the Castillo de San Jose, which houses Lanzarote’s Museum of International and Contemporary Art and which was somewhat ironically once dubbed the Fortress of Hunger by locals as it was built during a period of severe poverty back in the 1800’s.

Today however the restaurant there, Que Muac, specializes in the creation of traditional Canarian dishes with a modern twist and provides one of the most stylish backdrops for dining on the island. Thanks to Manrique’s addition of floor to ceiling glass which affords great views out to sea and a typically cool black and white colour scheme.

The Ayuntamiento in Arrecife are planning to put together a committee which will select some of the least known Manrique creations in the capital alongside existing favourites such as the Castillo and plans are afoot to launch this new route to tourists sometime early in 2016.
