Carry on Cruising

March 3, 2017

It’s not just passenger arrivals by air that continue to boom on Lanzarote. As the number of tourists visiting the island by sea has also taken off during the first four months of this year, with cruise passenger numbers rising by 36.9% for the year to date versus the same period in 2013, according to figures just released by the Port Authority of Las Palmas.

Lanzarote’s tourist industry is booming on all fronts, according to the latest data. With the number of passengers docking at Porto Marmoles in Arrecife rising from 130,475 arrivals for the period January to April 2013 to 178,624 arrivals for the same period this year, a major rise of 36.9%.

These figures are obviously in addition to arrivals by air, which have also jumped by 18% for the year to date, with the island welcoming 569,492 plane passengers during the first three months of 2014. Which means that in total Lanzarote has now received just under 700,000 visitors so far this year, an amazing figure that strongly suggests that the island is set for another record breaking year in terms of tourist numbers.

Cruise holidays are certainly growing in popularity worldwide, as according to Cruise Market Watch, on online data collection service, the sector is expected to grow by 7% per year right through until 2017. Fuelled by growing demand for this type of multi-destination holiday amongst the affluent 40 years plus market. Cruise lines have also addressed the issue of formality, with many cruises now offering a much more relaxed and laid back on board atmosphere than in years gone by. Whilst at the same time investment in bigger and newer vessels has also helped to drive demand.

All of which has helped to create an increase in passenger numbers to Lanzarote and the Canary Island in general, with the archipelago proving a popular choice especially during the winter months.

Much of this growth has been fuelled by bookings in the British market place, reflecting a similar rise in demand by air. Last month alone the UK accounted for nearly 50% of the total of 205,788 passengers that touched down at Arrecife airport, figures that reinforce the growing impression of a wider recovery in the British economy.
