Canary Day

February 28, 2017

The 30th of May marks an extra special day in the local Canarian calendar. As it was on this date in 1983 that the seven islands of the archipelago were granted autonomous status by the mainland government, as part of a wider program of national devolution across Spain.

Today, Dia de Canarias, is celebrated across all of the islands and is marked with a whole raft of events, making it an ideal time to be enjoying a villa break here on Lanzarote. So what sort of celebrations can visitors expect?

Well for starters you’re going to become very familiar with the national colours of blue, yellow and white, symbolising the sea, sand and light, as these make up the Canarian flag and will be appearing on bunting and displays across the island.

Many restaurants get into the festive swing by offering traditional Canarian cuisine, local school children don national dress, supermarkets offer free samples of tradtional food and drink and the strains of folkore music can be heard wafting out of a wide variety of establishements such as local bars and shops.

Specific events are also being staged in virtually every large town across the island and Playa Blanca is no exception. As on Sunday May 29th tourists can enjoy free samples of local food and drink along with some live folklore music in the Plaza Nuestra Senora del Carmen at 21.00. Whilst on the day itself, Monday May 30th, the massed ranks of the municipal band of Yaiza will be performing live in Calle Limones from 10.00 onwards.
