Access All Areas

January 10, 2017

New infrastructure investments have been made to improve the accessibility in the heart of Playa Blanca. 50,000 Euros has already been spent by the local Ayuntamiento creating new ramps and adding railings to the most heavily used roads in the southern town. This includes the main street Calle Varadero which runs down to the seafront and the pedestrian zone of Calle Limones.

As the resort becomes more and more popular, there has been an increasing need to ensure that visitors with either reduced mobility or young children can move around with ease in the town’s principal streets. In the past, Calle Varadero, for instance, was separated by terraces with steps, a nightmare for those who are restricted to wheelchair use.

Further funds will also be spent resurfacing the road which the Post Office sits on, Calle Correillo, as this has become more and more tricky underfoot following roadworks for the installation of services.

This kind of infrastructure improvement is long overdue, as the island becomes ever busier and increasing numbers of people put a great strain on facilities. Not so long ago, most of the main tourist attractions on Lanzarote were without any kind of wheelchair access.

This has now been redressed in several of the main centres of tourism but there are still one or two of the Manrique creations which are extremely difficult for those with physical restrictions to visit, such as the Jameos del Agua and the Foundation itself.
